THE SMOCK DRESS: HOW TO STYLE SO IT WORKS FOR YOU

Hey guys, I hope you are well? So the smock dress, are you a fan or just waiting for this current trend to pass by …. and quickly? I must admit, initially I was not a lover of the ‘smock frock’, deciding I would not be jumping on this particular bandwagon until I did try on a smock dress that I thought rather suited me. So I think that’s the key with fashion sometimes, be open minded. I had already discounted, after conjuring up thoughts in my mind that the smock dress would suit my inner 6 year old self better!

Obviously, with every fashion trend there are adaptations and not every style suits all. We come packaged in different shapes and sizes and what may look stylish on someone else, may resemble a nightdress on another (as I found out).

LENGTH IS KEY

Now first things first, length is definitely key when opting for the perfect smock dress. This particular smock dress currently available from  New Look is midi in length, I found that the longer lengths just accentuate my height and make me look larger (I am 5′ 11″), whereas the midi lengths flatter the legs and arms by elongating. However, if you like to hide your legs then opt for a longer line dress. I think the puff sleeves work brilliantly in a smock dress and give it such a fun feel.

PRINT OR COLOUR BLOCK

I’d say this was really important with smock dresses, I initially tried a few dresses in just one colour block (a plain white and a plain pink), and whilst I adore on other people they just did not do me any justice, in fact I looked a little bit like a placard! The dress I am wearing has a subtle print which manages to break things up a little, so it is important to experiment with a few different prints.

ACCESSORISING THE LOOK

It does go without saying that finishing touches can make or break a look entirely, and the accessories you choose to style with your dress  can help to tailor the look for a whole variety of occasions. If it’s a casual look you are aiming for, a pair of chunky trainers and tailored leather jacket looks effortlessly cool. Equally a pair of wedge heels and a cross-over body bag finished off with a chic pair of shades can make the outfit look effortlessly stylish, and perfect for a Saturday afternoon aperitif.

If you haven’t fallen in love with the smock dress, then I’d recommend a try on. You may be pleasantly surprised!
